Australia: The largest jumpsuit action ever
Amnesty International will kick off 2008 with the largest orange jumpsuit action in Australia. It will take place outside the US Consulate in Martin Place, Sydney.
Friday 11 January 2008 marks 6 years since the first detainees were transferred to Guantanamo. Six years of cruel and inhuman conditions in detention. Six years of a system of detention without charge, trial or judicial review.
“We have been ignored, locked up in the middle of the ocean for four years”
Guantanamo detainee Shaker Aamer.
In 2007 Australians were joined by citizens world wide in our campaign for justice for Australian detainee David Hicks. People around the world staged demonstrations and other activities calling on the US authorities to close Guantanamo. Join us in turning up the heat on the US Administration in 2008.
At 8am on Friday 11 January 2008 you can be part of the largest orange jumpsuit action in Australia’s history.
Join Amnesty International members at 8am to get your jumpsuit, put it on and take part in the photo shoot at 8:30am. We will represent the approximately 300 detainees in Guantanamo on the steps of the US Consulate.
Amnesty International National Director Claire Mallinson will call for the US to immediately close Guantanamo and end illegal detention. In our jumpsuits we send the message to end the human rights violations and close Guantanamo.
Not in Sydney?
Why don’t you join us by wearing an orange ribbon and helping to raise awareness by discussing the need to close Guantanamo with others.
