Poems from Guantanamo - AI Ireland
On June 26, Amnesty International Ireland hosted a poetry event at Buswells Hotel, Dublin with reading from Poems from Guantanamo.
Poems from Guantanamo is a collection of short poems written by Guantanamo Bay detainees while in custody at the US detention facility, some who are still there.
Poetry recitations were conducted by well-known Irish actors Sean McGinley, George Seremba, Denis Conway and Shadaan Felfeli, and all attendees were given a copy of Poems from Guantanamo by a generous Amnesty International donor.
Amnesty International Ireland also took this opportunity to announce the formation of the an inter-parliamentary group on renditions which will provide a cross-party opportunity to keep the spotlight on renditions and will also further position Ireland to play a vital role in the fight for human rights.

Following the poetry event, AI Ireland held a street demonstration in the evening, condemning the use of torture, and demanding the closure of Guantanamo Bay. An op-ed was also advertised in the local paper and was forwarded to the Taoiseach.
