Poems from Guantánamo, IrelandOn June 26, Amnesty International Ireland hosted a poetry event at Buswells Hotel, Dublin with reading from Poems from Guantanamo.

Poems from Guantanamo is a collection of short poems written by Guantanamo Bay detainees while in custody at the US detention facility, some who are still there.

Poetry recitations were conducted by well-known Irish actors Sean McGinley, George Seremba, Denis Conway and Shadaan Felfeli, and all attendees were given a copy of Poems from Guantanamo by a generous Amnesty International donor.

Amnesty International Ireland also took this opportunity to announce the formation of the an inter-parliamentary group on renditions which will provide a cross-party opportunity to keep the spotlight on renditions and will also further position Ireland to play a vital role in the fight for human rights.Amnesty International Irish Section Street Demonstration calling for the closure of Guantanamo Bay Detention Centre and an end to torture.

Following the poetry event, AI Ireland held a street demonstration in the evening, condemning the use of torture, and demanding the closure of Guantanamo Bay. An op-ed was also advertised in the local paper and was forwarded to the Taoiseach.
