Birthday event for Binyam Mohammed in Norwich
The local Amnesty International group of Norwich marked the up-coming birthday of Binyam Mohammed, who has now spent one fifth of his life in Guantanamo. Marking growing concern about Binyam’s physical and mental health, and the fact that the trial process is getting under-way in Guantanamo, there were visual representations of a ‘cage’ together with the notorious Abu Ghraib image of the man standing on a box with electric wires. The idea was to represent Guantanamo as well as Binyam’s rendition to torture centres in Morocco.
The group has been campaigning on Binyam’s case for some while, with one member, Edward Gibbs, writing to Binyam every week without fail. They know the letters are getting through because of acknowledgements from his defence counsel, Yvonne Bradley, and from Binyam’s sister Zuhra Mohammed.
The event on Saturday 19 July took place in the ‘Forum’, Norwich, very much the hub of central city life. It created much interest, and many took away leaflets with details of the case. There was also an opportunity to sign an open letter to the two MPs of Norwich, Charles Clarke and Ian Gibson, asking them to intercede with the British government to take a ‘more visible and robust stance to secure Binyam’s release’.
