Belgium lobbies European parliamentarians on rendition

End rendition action in BrusselsAmnesty International Belgium held a fantastic public event in front of the European Parliament in Brussels on June 26.

Activists lobbied with European parliamentarians to pressure governments on the issue of rendition, with over ten parliamentarians in attendance- one from every party, representing various states. Also present at the event were several media outlets reporting from Al Jazeera, Associated Press and Reuters to name a few.

The notable parliamentarians - Edward McMillan-Scott (UK) and Luisa Morgantini (Italy), Vice-Presidents of the European Parliament were also in attendance with Helene Flautre, Chairwoman of DROI, Subcommittee of Human Rights, European Parliament who spoke at the event.

30 april 2008: Stop Terreur met Recht tijdens Benefietconcert in Antwerpen

Op 30 april daverde de Antwerpse Groenplaats weer op haar grondvesten. De vzw Recht tegen Onrecht organiseerde er naar jaarlijkse gewoonte het benefietconcert ten voordele van Amnesty International. Dit jaar zetten onder anderen Tom Helsen, Delavega, Laïs, Neeka, Geena Lisa, Axl Peleman en Nicole & Hugo hun beste beentje voor voor de mensenrechten. Het concert stond dit jaar in het teken van de ‘Stop Terreur met Recht’.
Axl Peleman schreef en zong er een lied geïnspireerd op een gedicht van Osama Abu Kabir, een Jordaanse truckchauffeur die vast zit in Guantánamo. Het gedicht is opgenomen in de bundel ‘Poems from Guantanamo’.

To mark the 6th anniversary of Guantanamo Bay on Friday 11 January 2008, Amnesty International in Belgium marches in protest to the US Embassy. Activists in orange jumpsuits walk in chain gang through Brussels, escorted by numerous members of the parlements. (more…)
